VPS Hosting FAQs

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It is a logical or virtual server rather than a physical server. One physical server can host many virtual servers (VPS).
The main resources of the physical server such as CPU, RAM and diskspace can be shared amongst several virtual servers (VPS).

A Dedicated Server is a physical machine which hosts one operating system. A VPS is a virtual machine and several can be hosted on one physical server, each one using it’s own operating system.

A VPS is faster to set up than a Dedicated Server (minutes vs hours). A VPS is more scalable because it is not constrained by the physical limits of a Dedicated Server (i.e. disk space, CPU, RAM). A VPS has more self service options for the client in terms of upgrading because these can be performed remotely without the need for human intervention.

VPS are more cost effective because you are not paying for extra capacity that you are not using.

With Reseller Hosting you are hosted on a server with other users and you do not have any dedicated resources such as CPU or RAM assigned to you. With a VPS you get more power.
With a VPS you also get full control over your hosting environment so you are free to run the applications and software that you want and set up the VPS with the configuration you want as opposed to being limited by the restrictions of a Reseller hosting plan where certain configurations are not permitted to ensure a consistent platform.

Once your VPS order is approved it takes a couple of minutes to set up a VPS. You will be sent a welcome email with all of the login details you will need.

Our VPS are located in a state of the art Tier 3 Datacentre in London.

A VPS is more complex than shared or reseller hosting because you need to configure your server for security, etc. and maintain your VPS.

Yes. If you are not technical don’t worry, we can manage your server for you. There is an additional fee to be paid but you can be sure that your server is always well maintained.

WizzHosting VPS are Cloud VPS. Traditional VPS are hosted on one physical server. That means that the server represents a single point of failure and there are constraints in terms of upgrading because there is a restricted amount of key resources like CPU, RAM and Diskspace available.
A Cloud VPS on the other hand uses a number of servers in a cloud architecture to pool all of their resources together. This offers advantages in terms of reliability because VPS data is replicated across several physical servers.
Also there is much more ability to upgrade VPS because the whole of the cloud’s resources like CPU, RAM and diskspace are available.

Yes, very fast. As a minimum we offer 10K SAS hard drives which balance speed and reliability - they are Enterprise grade drives. We also offer super fast SSD (Solid State Drives) which are extremely fast. If speed is important to you then you should consider getting more CPU and RAM.

Traditional VPS are hosted on single servers which mean that there is a single point of failure if the server goes down due to hardware failure. With WizzHosting we use Cloud VPS so that the VPS are hosted in a cloud that consists of numerous physical servers.
The VPS data is stored across several physical servers so even in the unlikely event of a server failing completely there is no interruption to the service and the service is considered High Availability.

We use Dell Enterprise servers. As a minimum each server has dual components for key areas such as CPU, RAM, Hard Drives (HDDs), Power Supply and Network Cards. The HDDs and Power Supplies are both hot swap which means that they can be replaced without the need to power down the server which would result in downtime.

CPUS stands for Central Processing Unit. Think of it as being like the brain of the server. It sends and receives signals to the main components like RAM, hard drives, etc..

Cores or CPU Cores as they are known are components of the CPU and which allow the CPU to run multiple instructions simultaneously to improve the speed that the CPU operates at. The faster you want your websites or applications to run the more cores you will need.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is used to process instructions or to store data for the CPU. More RAM is needed for more demanding applications or websites to run fast.

This all depends on the type of website or application you are using. For most people just upgrading to a VPS from say a Reseller Plan they would be fine with 1 Core and 1GB RAM. That would give them a noticeable improvement from their current hosting environment because they have RAM and CPU power reserved purely for them rather than sharing it with other users.

SAS is short for Serial Attached SCSI (SCSI stands for Small Computer System Interface, pronounced as “scuzzy”). SAS interfaces transfer data to and from hard drives. 10K refers to the speed that the hard drive spins (i.e. ten thousand revolutions per minute). 10K SAS drives are fast and extremely reliable.

SSD stands for Solid State Drives. This is the most modern form of data hard drive. The main advantage of SSD is speed. This is because unlike traditional hard drives there are no moving parts - they are 100% electronic components.
The only downside is that they are more expensive due to the fact that they are newer technology and they do not offer the capacity of traditional hard drives at the same price point, i.e. amount of GB space per £/$/€.
