Domain Name FAQs

A domain name is a set of numbers and characters used to represent a website. A domain name is needed if you want to have a website or email addresses.

Your choice of domain name is personal. As a minimum we recommend that you register the .co.uk and the .com equivalent to prevent domain squatting.
Whichever you choose you can set up domain parking which will redirect one domain name to another one. Domain parking is a free service.

You need a website to have an online presence like a website and email addresses. Your domain name is like your internet real estate. A domain is the home of your business.

Yes and no. You can have a website but it would be based on someone else’s domain name. In order to have a full website you will need a domain name otherwise your website address will be long and confusing and not easy to remember.

When you register a new domain name it is instantly registered in your name with the domain registry. We will send you an email confirming the registration.

Domains can be registered for between 1 to 10 years.

Anyone can buy the most popular types of domain name like .co.uk or .com. Domains are issued on a first come, first served basis.
The only restrictions are that you must not register a domain that breaches the trademark or copyright of another company. Also with some domains like .eu there are residency and nationality requirements.

No. You can choose any domain name you like even if it is not the same as the legal name of your company.

Yes. Your domain name is 100% yours. We will register the domain name in your name or your company name. It is your property.

You are sent several reminders before your domain name is due to expire. These are sent at regular intervals starting at 90 days before the expiry date. You can then choose to renew the domain or let it expire if you don’t need it.

No. You can hide your personal details when you register a domain name using the Whois Privacy Service. With UK domains like .co.uk and .uk the Whois Privacy Service is free for individuals.
The Whois Privacy Service is not available for businesses registering Uk domains though. With Top Level Domains (TLDs) like .com, .net and .org there is an annual fee for the Whois Privacy Service.

No. We offer monthly hosting services where you can cancel whenever you want. There is no long term contract.

With domain names you are under no obligation to renew. If you do not wish to renew your domain name just let it expire on the renewal date. With web hosting you can cancel the service at any time from your WizzHosting Client Area.

Yes. We offer refunds for web hosting services within the first 30 days. If your hosting is renewed and you did not wish to renew then you just need to contact us within 30 days of the renewal and we will refund it in full for you.
For domain names these can not be refunded unfortunately as these are registered in good faith with the Domain Registry on your behalf.

Yes. With UK domains like .co.uk you just need to order a free domain transfer and we will provide ful instructions.
With Top Level Domains (TLDs) like .com this is a chargeable service equivalent to the cost of one year’s registration fees. With TLDs once the domain has transferred to WizzHosting one year will be added to the registration period.

Yes. Domains can be cancelled within 48 hours of being registered as long as we can cancel the registration with the Registry.

You can check the domain search facility on this page to see if your preferred domain is available or you can check with the publicly available whois database.

Yes, numbers are permitted in your domain name.

The only non alphanumeric character you can use in your domain is the hyphen symbol. However you can not use the hyphen at the start or end of the domain.
We recommend trying to register domains without hyphens though to avoid misspelling the domain name by entering the hyphen in the wrong location.

Most registries restrict the length of domains to 63 characters. However, for practical purposes we recommend keeping them shorter so that people can remember them.

Domains are fairly cheap. You can see our full domain pricing here.

There is evidence that suggests that domain names that include keywords in them get better rankings in search engines like Google. However, you can create specific pages which target certain keywords and use them in the URL of that page.
You need to balance the desire to have a good ranking with the fact that people need to be able to remember your domain name and that it represents your company’s image. You can use your industry and maybe the location if you want to optimise for a better search engine ranking.

You can pay for your domain with a debit or credit card or with PayPal.

When you register a domain it is your property 100%. You have the rights to the domain name for the period of the registration so you need to renew it when it is due for renewal.

No, there is no paperwork and no certificate of ownership.

You can cancel your domain name within 48 hours of registration as long as we can cancel with the registry.

There is no limit to the number of domain names you can register cheap domain names with us. As a minimum we recommend buying the most popular extensions like .co.uk and .com.

If you misspell your domain name you can cancel it within 48 hours and choose an alternative. We will be able to refund it if the registry will accept the cancellation.

You can check that you own the domain by checking the publicly available whois database.

When you register a domain name it can take several hours before the domain name is set as registered with the Registry. During this period the domain name may show as being available.

DNS stands for Domain Name Servers. Each domain is recognised on the internet by use of an IP address which is a series of numbers and is the physical address of the server that your domain name is hosted on. You can update your DNS through your billing area.

If you make changes to your domain name, particularly to the DNS records the time that these changes take to have effect across the internet are called domain propagation. For example if you change hosting providers you will need to update your domain’s DNS records and the period that this takes is called Domain Propagation.

Under normal circumstances domain propagation can take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours to be completely updated.

You can manage your domain name via your WizzHosting Billing area.

An EPP Code is a security feature of Top Level Domains like .com, .net, .org. It is a code that is required for domain transfers between companies to be initiated.
EPP Codes are not required for transfers involving UK domains like .co.uk or .uk. You can find your domain’s EPP code in your WizzHosting Billing area.

IPS Tags are used by UK domains like .co.uk and .uk to represent the company that is administering your domain name on behalf of the UK Registry, Nominet.
Nominet uses intermediaries to provide domain registration and domain management services and the IPS Tag is a unique way of identifying who is administering any particular UK domain name. A full list of IPS Tags can be found on Nominet’s website.

Domain Locking is a security feature of Top Level Domains (TLDs) like .com or .net. It ensures that no changes can be made to a domain’s settings (e.g. DNS) or contact details or to initiate domain transfers without the permission of the domain owner.

You can lock or unlock your domain name via your WizzHosting domain management area.

When your domain name is due for renewal you will be sent several renewal reminders starting at 90 days before the current expiry date. Further reminders will be sent at 60 days, 30 days, 10 days and on renewal. You can renew your domain at any time through your WizzHosting domain management area.

Yes, you can set your domains to be renewed automatically via your WizzHosting Billing Area. As a policy we do not set domains to auto renew. This is up to the domain owner to set the automatic renewal.

If you do not wish to renew your domain name you can just leave it expire and it will not be renewed. There is no obligation to renew your domain name.

If you forget to renew your domain you still have 30 days (known as the Grace Period) after it expires to renew it at the same cost. With Top Level Domains like .com if you do not renew for 30 days after expiry the domain name enters the Redemption Period where an additional charge is added to remove the domain name from Redemption.

Domain Redemption is a 30 day period after the Grace Period has expired. During the Redemption Period you can still renew your domain but there is an additional Redemption Fee to be paid.
If you do not renew your domain during the Redemption Period it will be released for re-registration on a first come, first served basis by the Registry so there is no guarantee that you will be able to re-register the domain name. The exact time of when it is made available for registration is set by the Registry at their discretion.
